    SCIENTIFIC NAME: Doellingeria umbellata (Aster umbellatus)


    COMMON NAMES: Flat-top Aster, Flat-topped White Aster, Parasol Whitetop, Parasol Aster, Tall White Aster

    BLOOM TIME: July, Aug, Sep

    PLANT PROFILE:

    • 3-6 ft. tall with reddish green stems which may be slightly hairy.
    • Leaves are lance shaped & densely hairy on the underside.
    • The flowers are a flat topped branched cluster, resembling an umbrella.
    • Small flowers are ½ in. wide, white, with 2-10 rays & yellow centers.
    • Seed heads have several white bristles.
    • Habitat: moist soil & full sun.
    • Present only in northern Illinois.
